winter sports travel insurance

a winter sports holiday may or may not have been on your radar before, but if you’re thinking of hitting the slopes, travel insurance with winter sports protection is a must.most travel insurance policies require you to add on a specialist winter sports policy extension to your standard cover to have protection against all the risks that could happen during a snowy break, including losing your ski pass, piste closures, and emergency medical expenses, should you accidentally injure yourself.so, regardless of whether you’re a beginner when it comes to taking the slopes, or even a hardened downhill slalom expert, comprehensive cover for any winter sports getaway is essential.

what cover do albert & eddie Winter Sports policies offer?

winter sports travel insurance is designed to cover all of the usual things you would expect to find included with your travel insurance, with the added bonus of having the extras you may need for your winter season holiday.

winter sports protection is a must. that’s why the majority of brands here at albert & eddie offer the option to add-on a winter sports extension to any standard policy, or offer their own specialist winter sports protection.

all specialist winter sports travel insurance policies and extensions at albert & eddie:

  • up to £10 million in case of a medical emergency
  • cover for your sports equipment (both your own and hired) if you lose them, they get damaged or stolen
  • cover for piste closure if this means you are unable to ski
  • off-piste cover (as veering off the designated piste isn't always included as standard on most policies)
  • ski pass protection if you lose it, it gets damaged or it's stolen
  • personal liability protection if something you do results in someone else being injured
  • plus, winter sports activities and equipment aren’t the only things included in travel insurance cover. you’ll also benefit from all the standard cover, including cancellation cover, 24/7 access to an assistance team in the case of a medical emergency, over 100 sports and activities covered as standard and cover for UK, European and worldwide trips, as long as you are not travelling against the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s travel advice

frequently asked questions

can I buy a winter sports policy if I have a medical condition?

yes – in most cases! our group of providers not only include specialist extreme sports providers, but medical providers too. this means we can confidently say that we will consider cover for most medical conditions and, where possible, find a policy that suits your travel needs. just let us know about any medical conditions you have when taking out a quote!

it's really easy to declare any medical conditions online. all you need to do is answer our short set of questions during the quote process and this will help us determine the most suitable policy for you, based on your health and the type of trip you’ve got planned.

in some cases, we may ask you to give us a call if we require additional information. it’s so important that you let us know about any medical conditions when buying a travel insurance policy as if you later need to make a claim related to your condition, you may not be covered.

do winter sports policies and extensions cost more?

did you know the average downhill skier can reach speeds of 40-50mph? sounds exhilarating, but speeds like that will mean your average travel insurance policy will not provide this cover as standard.

it comes as no surprise that participating in winter sport activities can come with its own risks, which is why it’s essential that you have the right cover in place. most standard travel insurance policies do not offer cover against the mishaps that could occur during a winter sports getaway. for example, your equipment, be it your helmet or snowboard, typically aren’t included under your standard policy’s possessions cover. standard policies also don’t provide cover for risks such as piste closure causing you to be unable to ski.

for this reason, it’s important to have suitable cover for your trip, even if this costs you a little extra.

what is classed as a winter sport activity within travel insurance?

a winter sports activity could be classed as anything from the slower-natured sleigh ride, on-piste skiing on the beginner's slope, ski-doo riding, ice hockey and even more extreme activities such as the ‘ice ultra-marathon’. each travel insurance provider may vary with their definition of ‘winter sports activities’. so, if your planned activity involves snow and/or ice in any capacity, it may be worth taking an extra couple of minutes looking into your policy to double-check it is covered.

what is not covered under a winter sports travel insurance policy?

some activities may not be covered under a winter sports policy due to being too high of a risk. for example, certain types of freestyle aerial skiing, as well as activities that go against the local authority’s advice aren’t typically covered on most winter sports policies.

that being said, as our panel of providers include specialist extreme sports insurers, if there is a specific activity that you would like to get involved in that’s not covered across our other brands, we may be able to tailor cover especially for you. just give us a call and we’ll see what we can do.

which destinations are covered by winter sports travel insurance?

most winter sports policies and extensions available at albert & eddie are able to cover almost every destination across the globe (as long as the country you plan to visit has not been advised against travelling to by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office).

just make sure you let us know which destination(s) you plan on travelling to and we’ll guide you to the most suitable policy for your trip.

do winter sports policies cover Covid-19?

most of the standard policies on offer at albert & eddie provide a basic level of protection against Covid-19. for example, cancellation cover if you can’t go on your trip due to catching the coronavirus up to 14 days before your trip takes place. plus, cover for medical expenses should you need emergency medical treatment due to Covid-19 while you’re away.

most policies at albert & eddie also have the option to enhance your Covid-19 protection with a policy extension. so, after you’ve added your winter sports extension (if needed), you can also add-on additional Covid-19 protection too, if you like.
